In the 16^th century when the city was captured by Poland on its territory have appeared other nationalities: Poles, Jews, Russian, Ukrainians, Lithuanians and Belarusians.

Today, the city remains a multinational. Its population can be divided into two groups: speakers of Latvian and Russian. In gender terms there is an overwhelming number of women (55%). The city's population each year is rapidly decreasing. The decrease in population began to watch since 1991. Then, the main reason, along with negative natural increase, was migration in Russian Federation, and later in Western countries.

Riga lies on the shores of the Baltic Sea, and consists of 6 administrative districts: Central, Ziemelsky, Kurzeme regions, Latgale, Vidzeme and Zemgale suburbs located on the both sides of the Daugava River. The official language is Latvian. Written language, which belongs to the Baltic group of Indo-European family, is based on the Latin alphabet. There is Christian. The largest areas are Roman Catholicism, Orthodoxy and Protestantism. The currency of Latvia is Lat.
